The ever-enjoyable Spitalfields Life blog has posted an excellent selection of previously unseen photos of the east end in the 1970s. Mostly shopfronts, they were taken by Chris Miles, then studying in London but now living in Canada. Here are just a couple.
Two 1936 designs for shopfronts in Prague (a stationer’s above and bookshop below), produced by that city’s School for Decorative & Housing Industries and featured in Industrial Arts magazine.
Faded moderne splendour, from Helena, Montana
Drage’s art deco store at 73-77 Oxford Street, c.1930. The architect was S Gordon Jeeves, also responsible for the Dolphin Square development later in the 1930s.
